Frozen Heart Kit

Description:

Learn the art of beading with shibori silk! This pendant was designed to show off the flow of shibori silk in a classic heart shape pendant. Meg was inspired by the icy colours of the silk in the original colourway and, pairing it with a collection of beads and components, created a subtle sparkle in the frozen landscape. A second colourway called Thawing Flame was born to provide a little more warmth with rich magenta and copper.

Students will learn/cover the following concepts:

  • how to effectively work with shibori silk, including how to shape it into a pleasing design in a dynamic shape, and how to manage the ends of the silk
  • how to embellish the silk with a range of beads and components (including incorporating a focal, and working with cupchain)
  • Bead embroidery (using a template)
  • Bezelling a pointed back stone such as a chaton/Rivoli
  • Backing and edging the pendant (optional embellishment)
  • How to neatly incorporate a bail in bead embroidery

Students to also bring:

  • E6000 Glue
  • Sharp pins (5-10)
  • Beading Thread. I suggest the following:
  • —A soft thread for stitching the shibori silk, in a colour to match the silk: eg One G, KO or Hana
  • —Thread of choice for stitching beads (eg keep using thread above, or Fireline
  • Beading Needles in preferred size (10 or 12)
  • Thread Burner
  • Scissors: I recommend 3 pairs- a sharp pointy pair for cutting fabric (foundation, backing); a pair for cutting thread; and an old pair you won’t mind wrecking for cutting cup chain (you can use wire cutters for this instead if you prefer)
  • Beading mat/surface
  • Permanent marker or gel pen for marking foundation
  • Beading Awl or toothpick (for spreading glue)-(tooth picks are provided in the kits)
  • Good Lighting and Magnification as needed

Basic design techniques and ideas for your individual pendant-no two pendants will be the same due to the nature of the silk and each student’s own preferences.

Do not expect to finish your piece in class. However, students will be provided with a full set of notes, including photos and diagrams, to be able to finish in their own time.

PLEASE NOTE: The heart shape will be provided as the template for the pendant; however students are welcome to provide a shape of their choosing should they not wish to create a heart. The design principles will remain the same.

Students please note: Shibori silk is a delicate fabric, therefore I would suggest making sure that you have clean and neat fingernails (ie no jagged edges) so nothing catches on your silk and pulls it. Your beading needles and pins (see supply list) should also be sharp, not blunt, for the same reason. Do not use any chemicals on your hands (eg hand sanitiser, handcream) as this may affect the quality of the silk.
