2022 Bead Retreat

One of the benefits of being a member of the Bead Society of Victoria, is the opportunity to attend exclusive, member only, Bead Retreats. 

In 2022, the Retreat will be held at University College, Melbourne University, Thursday 20 January - Sunday 23 January 2022. It's always a fun filled, crafty few days relaxing with all meals supplied.

    2022 Retreat Accommodation - New Ensuite Room (lift access)

    *Note – new ensuite rooms do not have air conditioning, however in keeping with the College’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, were built and certified to Passivhaus design standards.

    Students will learn how to Make shrink plastic flower charms and beads.  This most enjoyable process can be quite addictive.  During the class Catriona will demonstrate how to add colour and patterns to flower shapes before shrinking them into wonderful three-dimensional flowers.  Watching the plastic shrink can be quite mesmerizing.  Catriona will also demonstrate different ways to shape the flowers.  This class is covering the technique of how to make components.  Students can then take home and use them in their own bead weaving or embroidery designs.  Inspiration for finished pieces of jewellery will be shown in class.

    TECHNIQUES: Colouring and safely shrinking flowers using shrink plastic

    This lovely Earring and Pendant set is completed using folded Peyote, it is fun to do and gives a lovely two tone effect to the pieces.

    TECHNIQUES: Peyote stitch

    SKILL LEVEL:  A basic knowledge of Peyote stitch is required

    Faux techniques are one of the most exciting aspects of working with polymer clay. We will explore some techniques to make beads that imitate amber, turquoise and other semiprecious materials, which will (hopefully) look even better than real ones.  

    SKILL LEVEL: Beginner

    This bracelet is equally beautiful on both sides, one has a more pronounced pearl side the other side has interesting embellishments. You can choose which side is face up.  Dress it up or down. It's elegant and you can easily make it wider with more beads if desired. Very easy to wear and fun to make. I love to discuss variations in my workshops, so I will see what I can come up with.

    TECHNIQUES: right angle weave variation

    SKILL LEVEL:  Advanced Beginner and up. Must be familiar with using size 15 seed beads. General bead weaving skills needed. Knowledge of right angle weave useful

    COST: $35

    KIT: $19.50 (optional kit). Kit must be ordered from tutor by 16 January 2022. Kit colours peach/copper or purple.

    SKILL LEVEL:  Beginner; once this technique is learned, other size balls can be made
